  • From the first time we saw the stunning black clay angels, the signature of master artisan Carolina Nogeura's work, we knew there was something special. Her sculptures reminded us of the grotesques that adorn gothic architecture across Europe. Her work is sincere, emotive and sensitive, and as is the way with artists of her kind, the are a reflection of her spirit.

As a child, Carolina learned the process of working clay alongside her mother, renowned Tobatí ceramicist Doña Mercedes Areco de Noguera. And today, with two of her children, still she extracts the ñai'u (black clay) and kaolin (white clay) from the quarry, carries it home, mixes it, sculpts and polishes it, and then fires each piece with mango leaves for its distinct texture and coloration, transforming the earth around her into spiritual representations of refuge.

"Touching clay means value to me. It relaxes me, even if many bad things happen, I overcome everything. I don't get depressed or anything, because it gives me life, strength. I like touching clay, it's a passion for me. If I don't work, I don't feel at ease. The days seem longer."
